Cultural and natural heritage

The Tignes museum

« L'espace patrimoine le cour de Tignes » at the house of Tignes le Lac.

Contemplate seven centuries of history through photos de Tignes, objects, witnesses which tell of the history of this little village of stock-breeders which has become an international ski resort.

The cultural heritage of Tarentaise

The cultural heritage of the Tarentaise is intimately linked to its baroque art. This is a religious art which for a long time was disparaged but which has undergone a striking revival in the last few years as proven by the festivals of baroque music which flourish in the mountain villages. More and more visitors are crossing the thresholds of the chapels and churches of the Savoy and are coming to hear the legends of the saintly protectors, the angel musicians and the tales of villages swallowed up by the waters.

The natural heritage of the Savoy

Mountain fauna

The fauna of the Tarentaise which the visitor can observe, particularly in the Vanoise National Park, is rich and varied. The park has the most populous French colony of ibexes (alpine wild goats) (about 2000 heads), and about 5500 chamois. Apart from these large mammals, one can see the hare , the marmot, field-vole, fox, badger, marten, stone-marten, stoat, bats and insect-eaters such as the aquatic shrew.
In the bird population there is the royal eagle (20 couples), the ptarmigan, black grouse, partridge, great horned owl, the tridactyl woodpecker (seen in France only in the Savoy and Haute Savoy), the blackbird, to name only some of the 125 species nesting in the Vanoise.

Mountain flora : over a thousand species

To the original flora of the alpine mountains have been added eastern and southern species. Amongst the nationally protected species, one can see several species of androsaces, alpine ancolia, blue thistle, Piedmont primrose and the linneus borealis of which the only species in France are to be found precisely in the Vanoise national park and its surrounding area.
