Tignes Information
The town of Tignes is located on the upper part of the Tarentaise.
In both summer and winter, this resort is an important tourist centre whose reputation has long since gone beyond the limits of the Savoy and the Rhône-Alpes region.
Each season has its originality and holiday-makers will be easily seduced by the richness of the natural heritage of Tignes which they can discover through numerous skiing and walking excursions.
Lake of Tignes
2100 metres up on this wild mountain site, Tignes was built, now a famous winter sports resort.
The Tignes dam
180 meters high, this dam holds the waters of the Isère and the Arc and forms the lake of Chevril which supplies the power resorts of Brévières and Malgovert. The original village of Tignes was covered by the water and was reconstructed at Boisses.
This extensive sports centre offers not only skiing in winter but also activities such as yachting and fishing on the Tignes lake in summer.
La Grande Motte
The highest massif of the Espace Killy is the only part of the skiing area of Tignes which is open in all seasons. A land of rocks, ice and eternal snow, the landscapes are grandiose between the park of Vanoise in the south, the Grande Motte (3656 metres altitude) and the Grande Casse (3852 metres altitude) to the west, the Mont Blanc to the north and the Grande Sassière (3747 metres altitude) to the east.
Tovière sector
This massif links up with the Val d'Isère and skiers may access it from Tignes le Lac and Val Claret. Its summits are la Tovière (2705 metres high) and the col de Fresses (2580 metres high).
Secteur du Palet
This massif is accessible directly from Val Claret. It provides the links between Tignes le Lac and Val Claret. The highest points of this massif are the col des Vés (2840 metres altitude) and the col du Palet (2700 metres altitude).
Les Brévières
This massif is situated in the north-east part of the Espace Killy, Here, the ski slopes face the Grande Sassière (3748 metres altitude), the lake of Chevril and the massif of the Mont Blanc. The highest point of this massif is the Aiguille Percée (2748 metres altitude), a geological curiosity of the region, accessible on skis and from where one can view an exceptional panorama of the mountains and the lake of Tignes.
National park of the Vanoise
The Vanoise park was the first French national park. Its 60 000 hectares cover the the Vanoise massif between the Maurienne and the Tarentaise. Here, visitors can discover all the different varieties of the fauna and flora of the Alps.
The Vanoise national park is an important centre for the protection of the natural heritage of the Alps.
